A Servant Heart: Day 5....
John 13:12-17 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. [13] "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord', and rightly so, for that is what I am. [14] Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. [15] I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. [16] I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. [17] Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
It's funny how ego-centric we are in our thinking. We often see ourselves at the centre of everything, that we are the most important being in the cosmos, that it is there for our benefit. Yet here, as yesterday, we reflect on The Most Important Person Ever not caring about his position and status, but serving out of love.
Let's not get away from this, it was out of love, not duty or obligation. He had poured his life into these people and now as his last act he was giving them a visual illustration about serving them and each other. I wonder if James and John could look him in the eye as he spoke these words - they obviously left a huge impression on John. Actually I wonder if I can....
